By BBN Staff: Last night, tropical storm Jose was upgraded to a hurricane and it is located east of the powerful Category 5 Hurricane Irma in the Atlantic.

The NHC is reporting that the center of Hurricane Jose was located near latitude 13.9 North, longitude 45.8 West. Jose is moving toward the west-northwest near 16 mph (26 km/h), and this general motion is expected to continue for the next couple of days.

Jose’s maximum sustained winds have increased to near 75 miles per hour with higher gusts.

Forecasters say that additional strengthening will occur, and Jose could become a major hurricane on Friday.

Hurricane-force winds extend outward of up to 15 miles from the center and tropical-storm-force winds extend outward of up to 70 miles.

The estimated minimum central pressure is 29.36 inches.
