By BBN Staff: Yesterday, BBN reported that Tropic Air and Maya Island air issued a joint release informing that due to the condition of the runway in Caye Caulker, both airlines are suspending all flights to Caye Caulker effective October 1.

The release explained that the airlines had requested renovations of the runway to meet the approaching high tourism season.

In response, the Belize Airport Authority (BAA)  issued its own release late yesterday indicating it is in the final stages of acquiring funding from Social Security to begin the reconstruction of the island’s runway.

According to the BAA, the project will cost over 7 million dollars and is expected to begin in October. The BAA says that it will take about 8 months to complete.  The BAA also says that the design is complete and contractors have submitted their bids for construction works.

The bid evaluation process is to be completed by September 15.
