Benquenos irate over Guatemalan riders entering Belize to celebrate Guate’s Independence Day

By BBN Staff: Some pictures have been circling on social media of Guatemalan bands parading through Benque Viejo Town with the Guatemalan flag for the Tenth of September Celebrations which took place this weekend. Belizeans have been expressing their disappointment in allowing the Guatemalan flag to be displayed during national celebration activities in Belize.

Today, a group of Guatemalan riders on bicycles were heading west and passed through San Ignacio and Benque Viejo Del Carmen. The group had a police escort from San Ignacio to Benque Viejo Town. While San Ignacio residents only watched as the riders passed by, the case wasn’t the same with the Benquenos.

According to reports, a number of residents came out to the highway and shouted to the Guatemalan riders to go and celebrate their country’s Independence Day in their own country.

Reports indicate that the riders were riding with a lit torch to commemorate Guatemala’s Independence Day. The Guatemalan Independence Celebrations start at midnight.
