Elderly man killed in house fire

By BBN Staff:An early morning fire on the south side of Belize City has destroyed a two storey wooden home and claimed the life of an elderly man.

At around 9 a.m., fire officials were called to 8467 Gordon Street, in the Lake Independence area where the house had been engulfed.

Officers quickly extinguished the blaze which scorched another nearby building.

Santiago Gonzalez, 66, was the only person inside the home at the time of the fire.

However, his body showed no burnt signs. It is suspected that he died of smoke inhalation.

He was transported to the Karl Heusner Memorial Hospital (KHMH) where his body awaits a post mortem examination.

Police are investigating.
