By BBN Staff: US President Donald Trump has signed a memorandum sent to the Secretary of State with the subject, “Presidential Determination on Major Drug Transit or Major Illicit Drug Producing Countries for Fiscal Year 2018.”
Unfortunately Belize was listed as one of those countries along with: Afghanistan, The Bahamas, Bolivia, Burma, Colombia, Costa Rica, Dominican Republic, Ecuador, El Salvador, Guatemala, Haiti, Honduras, India, Jamaica, Laos, Mexico, Nicaragua, Pakistan, Panama, Peru, and Venezuela.
According to the memorandum, a country’s presence on the list may not reflect the government’s efforts or its cooperation with the US. Instead the listing was influenced by, “combination of geographic, commercial, and economic factors that allow drugs to transit or be produced, even if a government has carried out the most assiduous narcotics control law enforcement measures.”
The statement revealed that Bolivia and Venezuela have failed to adhere to their obligations under international counternarcotic agreements.
Coloumbia, according to the statement may also be in the same predicament.
According to Trump, he has determined that “support for programs to aid the people of Venezuela are vital to the national interests of the US.”
