By BBN Staff:Information to our newsroom is that Belize’s Military Attache to Guatemala, Lieutenant Colonel Ricardo Leal was detained by Guatemalan soldiers last week.

We understand that he was in his Toyota Rav4 when he was pulled up to a check point in Peten. The officers manning the checkpoint accused Leal of being intoxicated.

As a result he was ordered to surrender his pistol and vehicle and detained.

However, no charges were brought against him as there was no evidence to support that he was in fact intoxicated.

The Belize Ministry of Foreign Affairs have confirmed that Leal is back on duty at the Belize Embassy in Guatemala.

According to Belizean officials, Leal’s diplomatic immunity was ignored by the Guatemalan authorities who should have contacted the Embassy before taking any actions against him.
