Chester ready to sue

By BBN Staff: Assistant Commissioner of Police, Chester Williams is threatening to sue Commander of Easter Division South, Marco Vidal, if Vidal does not issue an apology for statements he made to the media this week.

On Tuesday, Vidal answered a question posed by Channel 7’s Jules Vasquez suggesting a perception that Williams had allowed reprieve to some criminal elements while restricting others. Vidal not only conceded that the perception exists, but went on to say that he does not subscribe to selective application of the law, and will pursue sanctions for anyone breaking the law.

Williams, through his attorney Andrew Marchalleck, sent Vidal a letter threatening legal action if Vidal does not comply with four demands. Those demands include: giving another media interview making a public apology to Williams; making an undertaking in writing that he will never repeat such statements; paying Williams’ legal fees, and monetary compensation for the damage to Willaims’ reputation.

The letter said: “…these allegations are completely untrue and constitute a grave slander upon our client. Our client has never been selective in enforcing the law against gang members and has never allowed anyone to engage in the marijuana trade. As a senior police officer and attorney at law, our clients have always acted to uphold the law.”

Vidal’s comments came during his critique of Williams’ gang mediation efforts, which he felt were ineffective at curbing the spike in violent crime in Belize City.
