By BBN Staff: A powerful 7.1 magnitude earthquake shook Mexico shortly after noon time today.
The quake swayed buildings and hit the country on the anniversary of a major quake that hit them in 1985.
The seismological agency in Mexico reported that the centre was east of the city in the state of Puebla. That municipality is about 40 miles southeast of the capital.
This quake comes after a violent 8.1 quake shook Chiapas less than two weeks ago and killed about 61 people.
Mexico’s National Civil Protection Chief, Luis Felipe Puente posted on his social media page that there were no reports of damage so far, but thousands of people fled office buildings along the central Reforma Avenue as alarms blared, and traffic stopped around the Angel of Independence monument.
