By BBN Staff: Foreign Minister Wilfred Elrington, known for making controversial remarks at home, has called out the United Nations for selectively applying its own principles on injustice.
Elrington, speaking at the General Debate of the 72 Session of the United Nations General Assembly, spoke up in defense of Belize’s longtime ally, the Republic of China, Taiwan pointing out that the country undergoes pressure without UN support.
“We see that injustice perpetrated upon the people of Taiwan who uphold the core principles and objectives of the UN and yet the UN itself fails to apply those principles and objectives to them,” Elrington said.
He went on to say that as a member of the UN, Belize cannot remain silent where injustice persists and called upon other nations to speak up as well. He also spoke up in defense of several other nations and their people, who are enduring persistent periods of injustice, including Palestine, Syria, Yemen, Western Sahara, South Sudan, and North Korea.
“For over half a century, the Cuban people have been the victims of the injustice of an egregious and illegal unilateral embargo,” he added.
Elrington told the assembly that humanity suffers when the UN fails to uphold its standards.
Earlier this year the United Nations took the decision to not invite the Republic of China Taiwan to participate in the 2017 World Health Summit.
