By BBN Staff: Prime Minister Dean Barrow has indicated that after November, the government will no longer be able to fund the Senate Select Committee carrying out an investigation into allegations of corruption at the Immigration Department. The committee was tasked with investigating the findings of the Auditor General’s Special Report on Immigration, which revealed mass irregularities.

The Belize Chamber of Commerce and Industry (BCCI), however, want the hearings to continue.

Last week, BCCI wrote to the Prime Minister expressing that his decision to discontinue funding the hearings goes against the Committee’s objectives.

Furthermore, the BCCI expressed that the hearing is not an expense but an investment.

According to BCCI Senator, Mark Lizarraga, if the government is serious about cleaning up the Immigration Department, then they must ensure that the work of the Senate Select Committee continues. According to Lizarraga, the committee’s terms of reference does not have a time frame because the committee needs to do a thorough and complete investigation.
