No air conditioning for over 3 months at San Ignacio Hospital

By BBN Staff: Breaking Belize News has confirmed that the San Ignacio Hospital has been without air condition (AC) for over 3 months now.

The hospital was designed with little natural ventilation as a centralized AC system was to ventilate and maintain a comfortable temperature in the main hospital building and the wards where patients are kept. The centralized AC unit malfunctioned towards the end of June, leaving the administrative area, emergency ward, maternity ward and the area where trauma patients are kept without AC. Only the delivery room of the hospital currently has AC services.

The design of the building along with the malfunctioning AC causes poor ventilation in the hospital. Since the hospital is without AC for an extended 3 months period, this can create a major risk particularly for patients, visitors and hospital staff.

The air in hospitals are known to commonly contain fungi, bacteria and viruses, which are caused and spread by poor ventilation and high temperature. Growth of mold on the hospital walls and floors is also facilitated by poor ventilation, high temperature and moisture.

A separate danger is the accumulation of carbon dioxide (CO²) due to lack of ventilation in the rooms and wards and this can become uncomfortable for patients, staff and visitors, particularly those who already have difficulty breathing.

Due to the seriousness of this matter, BBN decided to release this information hoping to get swift action from hospital administration and the Ministry of Health.
