By BBN Staff: The National Hurricane Center (NHC) is closely monitoring Tropical Storm Nate.
This morning, the tropical depression sixteen was upgraded to Tropical Storm Nate.
Nate will affect Nicaragua and Honduras today. Cancun and Cozumel, Mexico will experience heavy rains and winds too.
A hurricane watch is in effect for Cancun and Cozumel.
As of this morning, the center of Nate was located inland over northeastern Nicaragua near latitude 14.3 North, longitude 83.7 West.
Nate is moving toward the northwest near 9 miles per hour.
A turn toward the north-northwest at a faster forward speed is expected later today, with that motion continuing through Friday night.
The center of Nate should move across northeastern Nicaragua and eastern Honduras today and then over the northwestern Caribbean Sea tonight and Friday.
The center is expected to approach the coast of the Yucatan Peninsula late Friday.
Maximum sustained winds are near 40 miles per hour with higher gusts.
Forecasters say that little change in strength is expected today while the center is over land.
The NHC reports that strengthening is likely once the center moves over the northwestern Caribbean Sea tonight and Friday.
Tropical-storm-force winds extend outward up to 70 miles mainly over water to the east of the center.
Interests in Mexico’s Yucatan Peninsula, western Cuba and the U.S. Gulf Coast should monitor the progress of this system closely.
