By BBN Staff: On Thursday the Belize Bureau of Standards (BBS) held a consultation with producers of prepackaged goods. The purpose of the consultation was to meet with stakeholders and discuss the standards for labeling their products.
According to BBS Consumer Protection Liaison Officer, Rodolfo Gutierrez, this will be a compulsory standard for prepackaged foods.
This will prepare small and medium enterprises to get the quality assurance level of their businesses established so that if they decide to export, they would be able to meet labeling requirements.
Some of those prepackaged food labeling requirements involve providing an expiration date and providing a list of ingredients, he said.
The BBS hopes to put a policy paper together on this matter by the middle of next year.
