By BBN Staff: Tropical Storm Nate spared Belize with the center passing about 240 miles east of Belize City on Friday.
According to the National Hurricane Center, Nate strengthened into a Category 1 hurricane late Friday night and is moving rapidly over the central Gulf of Mexico with winds of over 75 mph.
The eye of Nate will move across the Gulf today.
Nate will make landfall by Sunday east of New Orleans which was devastated 12 years ago by Hurricane Katrina.
According to CNN, Nate will be the third hurricane after Harvey and Irma to hit the US mainland in six weeks.
In Central America, 22 deaths have been reported after Tropical Storm Nate moved over the region with heavy rain and gusty winds.
