By Zoila Palma: Today is commemorated worldwide as International Day of the Girl.
This is a call by the United Nations for the “Empowerment of Girls Across the World.”
Empowered girls are raising their voices to fight for their rights and protection in all contexts in celebration of the International Day of the Girl celebrated under the theme, “EmPOWER Girls: Before, during and after crises.”
The theme focuses on working to end violence against women and girls, to recognize indigenous rights, and to build peaceful and cohesive communities.
In her statement on the International Day of the Girl, Executive Director of the United Nations Population Fund, Dr. Natalie Kanem said, “many girls manage to play a critical role in their homes and communities, even in crises. They are often the first responders who care for their families and establish networks that produce the social capital and resilient communities need to survive. Protecting and promoting their rights, health, and well-being is therefore an essential element of crisis preparedness, effective response and recovery.”
In 2011, the United Nations declared October 11 as the International Day of the Girl.
