By BBN Staff: Hurricane Maria ravaged Dominica in September when it made landfall on the island with 185 mph winds and heavy rains.
Maria destroyed the country’s infrastructure and claimed 27 lives.
The Government of Belize is providing assistance to the island by sending a group of officers from the Belize Defense Force to assist.
The Chief Executive Officer in the Ministry of Defense, Rt. Lt. Feliz Enriquez explained the deployment of the officers:
“One of the various partnerships that we are heavily involved with in the region is disaster relief and in that effort the Belize Defence Force and through the Ministry of Defense is sending a platoon of light engineers to Dominica to assist with the reconstruction. As you all know that country has been badly devastated recently by Hurricane Irma and so Belize is sending a platoon of light engineers and they will be deployed hopefully within the next week for a period of 2 months to construction roofs and housing reconstruction in Dominica as part of the regional security system that Belize is a part of.”
According to Enriquez, the request was initially for security purposes but that has been addressed, therefore, the team going is to engage in rebuilding efforts.
