By BBN Staff: The Benque Viejo Taxi Association has written to the Mayor of San Ignacio and Santa Elena Towns demanding him and his council to cease discrimination against taxi drivers from Benque Viejo Town.
The letter was sent to Mayor Trapp by the Law Firm of Musa and Balderamos acting on behalf of the Benque Taxi Association.
According to the letter, there is blatant discrimination from San Ignacio and Santa Elena Town Council’s traffic wardens against Benque taxi drivers. It further states that many taxi operators from Benque have been given traffic tickets for “obstruction of traffic” when they haven’t been obstructing.
The letter cites Section 10,15 and 16 of the Belize Constitution that provides for citizens freedom of movement and the right to be gainfully employed and protection against discrimination.
The association is demanding that traffic wardens in San Ignacio Town immediately cease and desist from restricting the movement of Benque Taxi Operators and issuing tickets to them in cases when there is clearly no obstruction.
In the event of further acts of discrimination, the association says that they will proceed with a constitutional motion against the San Ignacio and Santa Elena Town Council.
