By BBN Staff: The Karl Heusner Memorial Hospital (KHMH) is postponing elective (non-emergency) surgeries, because of quality assurance issues with blood donations.

Reliable sources say that the Ministry of Health’s medical lab does not have the necessary chemical reagents to test blood and ensure its safety. The event marks the second issue relating to blood that the national health system has had to face for 2017.

In July the Belize National Blood Transfusion Service (Blood bank) issued a statement saying that blood stocks were critically low. Elective surgeries were also being postponed in the north last month due to equipment issues. Breaking Belize News will be updating as more information becomes available.
