By BBN Staff: Labor Commissioner, Ivan Williams, was summoned to testify on Wednesday before the Senate hearing.
However, from the onset he denied that the Ministry of Labor was in fact responsible for any of the abuses or breakdowns documented in the Auditor General’s special audit of the Immigration Department.
When it was put to him that work permits issued may have been done so erroneously, Williams immediately deflected.
According to him, it is not the Ministry of Labor that issues work permits. Instead, those permits are only issued by the Director of Immigration and Nationality.
So what then is the Ministry of Labor’s involvement in the process?
According to Williams, his Ministry only makes recommendations.
Applications for work permits made to the Ministry which then analyzes the labor market and determine if there is any need for the skills that the applicant possesses.
If so, the Ministry of Labor nods to the Immigration Department.
