By BBN Staff: Aldo Salazar, Chairman of the Senate Select Committee, on Wednesday went on record to say that the corruption observed in the Immigration Department has largely to do with Asian nationals coming into Belize to work and not those workers from Central America as they are too, “poor.”
“Those migrant workers are too poor to feed that sort of corruption that is being fed by a different type of immigrant. I feel what we have seen from the report has practically a large number to do with Asians…” said Salazar.
When he asked Labor Commissioner, Ivan Williams, if there was any policy in place as we do not need more ship attendants as Belizeans can do those jobs, Williams responded that that is a responsibility of the national employment permit committee.
He further revealed that a recommendation has been made to the Immigration Department that permits no longer be issued in those areas.
However, the Immigration Department according to Williams, can still chose to issue those types of work permits.
