By BBN Staff: Imer Hernandez, the nephew of disgraced erstwhile Deputy Prime Minister Gaspar Vega has been granted another multi-million dollar contract for the Caye Caulker Airstrip. This news comes after PM Barrow had to call a press conference on Wednesday to defend the Faber’s Road contract that was awarded to Hernandez for eight million dollars.
Minister of Tourism, Manuel Heredia confirmed to Channel 5 Belize News yesterday that Hernandez’s company was awarded the seven million dollar contract to construct the airstrip in Caye Caulker.
“Today I must assure you that we have advanced monies to the contractor Mister Hernandez for that airstrip to commence, and as early as tomorrow you will see material and equipment moving to Caye Caulker to give commencement to this airstrip which will be wider, higher and we have to redo all over again; the foundation has to be completely redone and hence the reason it will be an expensive airstrip,” the Tourism Minister told Channel 5 News.
Last month, the Belize Airport Authority (BAA) issued a release informing the public that the funding for the airstrip would be acquired through a loan from the Belize Social Security Board.
In the release, the BAA said that the project will cost over 7 million dollars and it will take about 8 months to complete.
