By Zoila Palma: The Embassy of Mexico in Belize will be celebrating the Dia de Muertos tonight.

The event is taking place at 6 at the Mexican Cultural Institute in Belize.

The Mexican Embassy is inviting the public to attend this special occasion.

During the celebration, the embassy will be honoring Mexican artists and will make special mention of the victims that died on the September 2017 earthquakes in Mexico.

The Day of the Dead (known as Día de Muertos in Spanish) is celebrated in Mexico between October 31st and November 2nd.

On this holiday, Mexicans remember and honor their deceased loved ones.  It’s not a gloomy or morbid occasion, rather it is a festive and colorful holiday celebrating the lives of those who have passed away.

As part of the tradition, Mexicans visit cemeteries to light candles on the graves of their loved ones and spend time praying in the cemetery accompanied by friends and family members.

In Belize, the Mestizo people still practice these traditions and many of them take the favorite food of their loved ones that have passed away to their tombs as part of the celebration.
