By BBN Staff: In an effort to continue public awareness campaigns on Belize’s precious manatees, researcher Jamal Galves is hosting the third annual “Cocktail for Manatees” fundraiser at the Old Belize Pavilion.
The initiative features live entertainment as well as auctions, forming a part of the efforts to raise around $13,000 for the educational campaigns to continue. Manatee awareness efforts are critical in Belize because manatee deaths in Belize primarily occur due to boaters not abiding by the 5-mile-per-hour speed limit in the designated “No Wake” zones.
Belize is home to the last 800-1000 still in existence; however, there have been 34 manatee deaths due to human interaction in 2017.
There were 44 manatee deaths in 2015 and 27 in 2016, indicating that there is a level of effectiveness for the outreach activities. But with each manatee death, the world inches closer to losing these creatures for good.
