Official opening ceremony for Punta Gorda Sports Complex underway

By BBN Staff: Belize Infrastructure Limited (BIL) has issued a release informing the public that the Punta Gorda Sports Complex has reached substantial completion and will be in use this weekend, Friday November 10^thand Saturday November 11^th, 2017 to welcome and host the return of Battle of the Drums.

The BIL team concluded an extensive site visit yesterday, November 9^th along with Punta Gorda Mayor Fern Gutierrez, and the Local Sports Council Management Committee to ensure the facility is well prepared to host the event.

According to the release, the Government of Belize welcomes the opening use of the facility highlighting the multi-purpose functions of the project now being delivered by BIL extended to culture, entertainment, and sports.

“While works on the grounds do continue for civil works to complete site filling and drainage, the building is now complete and ready for use,” states the release.

The facility includes locker rooms, events changing rooms, offices, concession spaces, ticketing, storage and specialty equipment including professional GARAD retractable backboards, shot clocks and electronic scoreboard package, court covers en-route, a media room and a separate dedicated rental area for gym facilities.

The total building costs is approximately BZ$3.4 million with additional contingency funds to complete the landfill, drainage, and civil works now underway.

The official opening ceremony will be held today at 10 am.
