Diabetes Association holds health fair in Belize City

Posted: Tuesday, November 14, 2017. 3:29 pm CST.

BBN Staff: The Belize Diabetes Association (BDA) held a health fair in Belize City today in honor of World Diabetes Day.

The BDA gathered along with several health sector partners including the Belize Cancer Society, Kidney Association of Belize, Pan American Health Organization and Ministry of Health to share pertinent information about diabetes and living healthy lifestyles.

BDA President, Anthony Castillo, explained that the 2017 theme for the celebration of World Diabetes Day is “Women and Diabetes,” to honor the role women play in both the prevention and treatment of diabetes.

“We just got updated information from our International Diabetes Federation that says that 425 million persons worldwide are now living with diabetes. Even here in Belize there is an increase. Our last numbers stated that 14.3 percent of Belize’s population were living with diabetes; I think we have now moved to 15.7,” Castillo said.

He went on to say that the number is around 50,000 Belizeans, which is alarming given the population size. Castillo also said that the BDA is working along with the Ministry of Health and its other partners to chart a course forward to address the rising levels of diabetes and its accompanying complications.

There are three types of diabetes: Type 1 or Juvenile Diabetes; Type 2 which is found in adults; and Gestational Diabetes, found in pregnant women.
