Shootout in Santa Elena Town

By BBN Staff: According to reports, on Friday night, San Ignacio police were stationed at a checkpoint on La Loma Luz Boulevard in Santa Elena town when police stopped a Hyundai Santa Fe and informed the driver that they would search his vehicle.

Police report that the driver put his hand in his pocket and attempted to pay the officers.

The officers informed the driver of the offense committed and told him that he would be arrested.

The man then took out a hand gun from his pocket and a struggle ensued between him and one of the officers.

A shot was discharged and the driver freed himself from police, fired two more shots at the officers then escaped.

Police returned fire, however, they made searches in the area of the incident and didn’t find the driver.

He has been identified as Honduran – Gerson Espinoza Medina.

The vehicle is currently impounded at the San Ignacio Police station.

Police suspect that he may have been injured from the exchange of gunfire.
