Happy Garifuna Settlement Day!

BBN Staff:  Today is celebrated in Belize as Garifuna Settlement Day.

The National Garifuna Council began the month with the Annual Garifuna Solidarity Mass on November 4, 2017 and activities highlighting Garifuna culture continued throughout November leading up to today.

Yearly, hundreds of Belizeans gather in Dangriga to experience the Yurumein reenactment which takes place this morning depicting the arrival of the Garifunas into Belize.

The celebration then continues throughout the day with Garifuna drumming, cultural food, and cultural presentations.

In 1802, the first group of Garinagu led by Alejo Beni landed in Belizean waters.

Thomas Vincent Ramos led the charge to have the day officially recognized in the country and that was when Belizeans were privileged to celebrate the accomplishments of the Garinagu.
