Belize ranked 156 out of 196 countries in cost of broadband Internet

BBN Staff: Belize was ranked 156 out of 196 countries on a list of the world’s most expensive broadband Internet rates compiled by UK-based consultancy firm, BDRC Continental and broadband watchdog, Cable.co.uk. Among 37 Caribbean and Central American nations listed, Belize ranked 28th.

The survey listed Belize’s average monthly cost of broadband at US $88.94 (Bze $177.88) per month. According to the researchers, the price of the most basic package at each speed level were  compiled and averaged for the results.

The study analyzed over 3,351 broadband packages all over the world between August 18-October 12, 2017. Surprisingly, the country with the fastest broadband for the most affordable price is Iran, offering broadband packages as low US $5.37 per month.

According to the report, six of the ten countries where broadband is the cheapest were formerly a part of the USSR (now collectively known as the Commonwealth of Independent States or CIS), including the Russian Federation itself.

In the Caribbean, Saint Martin, the Dominican Republic and Saint Barthelemy had the cheapest rates, ranking at 19th, 43rd and 52nd in the world respectively. Haiti had the most expensive broadband rates in the Caribbean at US $224.19 monthly!

The United Kingdom ranked 63rd in the world with average broadband rates of US $40,65 per month. The United States ranked 114th with broadband rates at an average of US $66.17 monthly.
