Belize ranking drops on Ease of Doing Business Index

BBN Staff: Belize’s ranking on the Ease of Doing Business Index prepared by the World Bank Group, has fallen from when compared to last year.

Belize ranked 121 out of 190 countries in 2017, while its 2016 ranking was 112. The report, which is a benchmark study of the business regulations within the nations listed, ranks countries by using their average scores taken from 10 categories.

Those categories include: Starting a business, Dealing with construction permits, Getting electricity, Registering property, Getting credit, Protection minority investors, Paying taxes, Trading across borders, Enforcing contracts, and Resolving insolvency. The report noted that Belize had seen marginal improvements within the first four indicators.

Belize’s highest score was in the area of Paying Taxes, while its lowest score was in the area of getting credit. Belize’s ranking has been in constant decline since its appearance on the list of ranked countries. In 2006, Belize was ranked at 56, in 2010 the ranking had dropped to 99. By 2014 Belize was ranked at 118.

During those sample years, Getting credit fell from 83 in 2006 to 160 by 2014. Similarly, protecting minority investors fell from 118 in 2006 to 169 by 2014, in 2017 that ranking recovered to 132. New Zealand ranked first on the list, while Somalia ranked 190.
