By BBN Staff: Police confirmed yesterday that a contraband bust involving Edgar Patt, the brother of Labor Minister Hugo Patt, in Patchakan, Corozal got heated as hostile villagers faced off with customs officials and police in an attempt to secure the contraband goods.

According to police, cops intercepted a white vehicle with 25 cases of contraband beer and turned them over to customs officials. The vehicle was coming from an illegal crossing called “Estero”, according to police, and after he crashed into a lamppost, he was caught trying to stash the goods inside a cane field.

The custom officials confiscated the goods and the villagers began to throw stones at them.Police were called to the location. But in yesterday’s press brief, police told the media that they do not have the particulars of the driver of the vehicle.

Patt, however, was taken to court where he pleaded not guilty and was given bail of $6,000. Customs officials are also reportedly pursuing charges for the villagers who obstructed their work.
