Cabinet agrees to vote ‘No’ to UHS payment

BBN Staff: Following Prime Minister Dean Barrow’s return to the country on Monday, Cabinet met in Belmopan yesterday and according to reports, decided that it would vote unanimously against paying $90 million to the Belize Bank for the secret agreement made for Universal Health Services (UHS) under the Said Musa PUP administration, according to a report from Channel 7 News.

Cabinet met to discuss the ruling handed down by the Caribbean Court of Justice (CCJ) last week in favor of the Belize Bank. After the ruling, several high ranking UDP ministers spoke out publicly declaring they would not support the motion to pay the $90 million award.

In interviews with 7 News following yesterday’s Cabinet meeting, UDP Ministers Wilfred Elrington, Michael Finnegan, Tracy Taegar-Panton, Elodio Aragon and Anthony Martinez all said their positions hadn’t changed and confirmed they would still not support paying the award. The Prime Minister is currently holding a press conference at the Best Western Biltmore hotel in Belize city, where he will soon be announcing the government’s official position on the matter.
