Chamber to PM: “Don’t shoot the messenger!”

Posted: Wednesday, December 6, 2017. 10:02 am CST.

BBN Staff: Following a recent public back and forth between Prime Minister Dean Barrow and the Belize Chamber of Commerce and Industry (BCCI) regarding the $90 million UHS debt, Chamber President Nikita Usher, in an interview with Channel 5 News, said the PM was not listening to the message but shooting the messenger instead.

Usher said he felt the PM’s letter was insulting, given the Chamber’s role as one of the main stakeholders in the country’s development. Usher added that even if PM Barrow has a problem with the messenger; the message, which is one that reform is necessary to ensure another UHS saga is never again possible in Belize, should not be ignored. Usher encouraged other public and social partners to join in on the national discussion.

Sine the ruling from the Caribbean Court of Justice (CCJ), the UHS saga has once again dominated the national landscape, with several ministers saying adamantly that they will vote against paying the award.
