Diverse abilities parade held in Belize City

Posted: Wednesday, December 6, 2017. 1:45 pm CST.

By BBN Staff: Students with diverse abilities of all ages paraded through Belize City this morning, as part of the awareness activities for Disabilities Week.

The parade started at the Battlefield Park, headed over the swing bridge and up North Front Street and ended with a rally at the Fort George Memorial Park.

Erlette Thomas, Manager of National Resource Center for Inclusive Education (NARCI) said that the parade was a show of solidarity and that persons with diverse abilities need not be ashamed.

Thomas said that the parade is one of several activities in observance of the week, which began with International Day for Persons with Disabilities on Sunday, December 3. The activities include a hand sign spelling bee tomorrow, and the Special Olympics on Friday.

The week is celebrated under the global theme, “Transformation Towards Sustainable and Resilient Society For All.”
