By BBN Staff:  The Belize Police Department is asking the public to reconsider purchasing toy guns for children as Christmas gifts as a safety precaution.

Senior Superintendent of Police, Bart Jones, explained that there are various firearm replicas that are being sold both online and in stores, some of which are indistinguishable from actual firearms.

Jones noted that such toys could be used to commit robberies, but also could provoke a violent response from a licensed firearm holder, who may feel threatened.

“We just want to send that warning out there, be considerate when purchasing these kind of toys for your kids,” Jones said.

Coming into the Christmas season, police have increased their presence on the streets and have been working with municipalities to encourage citizens to make safer choices during the holidays.
