By BBN Staff: Leader of the Opposition, John Briceño, condemned Church Senator Ashely Rocke this week, accusing him of betraying the Belizean people in favor of the Government of Belize.
Briceño, speaking on the failure of the opposition’s motion to amend the Maritime Areas Act in the Senate, said that it was Rocke’s betrayal of the Belizean people that caused the motion to fail. Briceño said that the opposition had brought the motion at the Senate because taking it to the lower house was a guaranteed loss; however, they thought they could seal a victory with the aid of the social partners.
“…every time he votes, he votes on the side of the Government, and now we need to be asking, why is Senator Rocke always voting with the Government? Is he there representing the government? Or is he there representing the churches and the Belizean people?” Briceño told Channel 5 news.
Rocke’s appointment was controversial from the beginning, as the out-district chapters of the Belize Evangelical Association of Churches were excluded from having a say in which senator would represent the churches. Since his appointment in 2015, Rocke has only two notable dissensions from positions that the government has held. Those dissensions are with respect to the Section 53 constitutional challenge, decriminalizing sodomy in Belize, and the decriminalization of marijuana.
