UN votes 128-9 to reject US decision on Jerusalem; Belize votes against it

Posted: Thursday, December 21, 2017. 4:19 pm CST.

By BBN Staff: The countries.of the United.Nations, by an overwhelming majority, have voted not to acknowledge Jerusalem as the Capital City of Israel, despite threats of discontinued aid by the United States.

A total of 128 countries voted in favour of defying the US designation, and also encouraged other countries not to move their embassies there. A total of 65 countries did not register a vote to defy the motion:9 saying no, 35 abstaining and 21 not voting at all.

The move immediately caused a frenzy in international media circles, invoking responses from both Prime Minister of Israel Benjamin Netanyahu and Israel’s ambassador to the UN Danny Danon.

Dannon accused the countries that voted against the US motion of being controlled by Palestine. While Netanyahu maintains that Jerusalem is the capital city, but thanked the countries for their participation.

President Trump made a statement prior to the vote warning earlier this week that the US would be monitoring the results to see which countries voted against the US motion.

“They take hundreds of millions of dollars and even billions of dollars, and then they vote against us,” Trump said. “Well, we’re watching those votes. Let them vote against us, we’ll save a lot. We don’t care.”

Belize was among the nations that voted against the US motion.
