Police to introduce GSU 2.0 next year

Posted: Saturday, December 23, 2017. 11:00 am CST.

>The Belize Police Department, in 2018, will introduce anti-gang legislation, which will create specific gang related offenses so as to directly address the matter of criminal gangs.

According to Commissioner of Police, Allen Whylie, there currently exists no anti-gang legislation.

Whylie also explained that in the new year, the department will introduce an anti-gang tactical unit.

This unit will be an extension of the Gang Suppression Unit (GSU), in the sense that it will not serve as a first responder to crimes like the GSU but will instead gather intelligence that will lead to the prosecution of gang leaders, their financiers and the members of their gangs.

According to Whylie, this will be a highly trained unit in intelligence gathering and investigations.
