One dead in accident near Belize/Guatemala border

BBN Staff: Police have released information on a fatal road traffic accident, which occurred last night.

According to police, around 6:45 p.m., Benque Viejo police visited the George Price highway near the Belize western border.

When cops arrived, officers observed a Hispanic man lying on the highway , apparently dead with a large cut wound to the left side of the head and left side of neck.

About 120 feet away from from the body, police saw a red Toyota Corolla taxi cab with damages to the entire front portion.

The driver of the taxi was identified as Santos Chiquil, 67, of Las Lomas Del Rodeo.

He told police that while driving his taxi in the direction of Benque Viejo town, another vehicle was approaching from the opposite direction with its high beam on, which blurred his vision and as a result he swerved to the extreme right and accidentally hit the Hispanic man.

The body of the victim was identified as Alberto Maas, 59, of the New Border Area of Benque Viejo Del Carmen.

He was transported to the San Ignacio Poly Clinic where he was pronounced dead. Police are investigating.
