Parliament voting on UHS payment this week

Posted: Tuesday, January 2, 2018. 7:28 pm CST.

BBN Staff: Prime Minister Dean Barrow, during his New Year’s address, finally announced the date that he will bring the controversial motion for the payment of the Universal Health Services settlement to Parliament.

Barrow, who had said that he will drag out the motion as long as possible, announced that will take the motion on Friday, January 5, as was previously speculated.

The motion will ask area representatives to decide whether or not Belize will honour the ruling of the Caribbean Court of Justice ruling, and pay over $90 million to the Belize Bank, resulting from a secret arrangement made with the Said Musa administration of the People’s United Party.

Barrow has said that he will ask the ministers to vote their conscience and, even though he is the one bringing the motion, he intends to vote his conscience as well. Nine ministers from the government’s side of parliament have already declared publicly that they will vote “no” when the motion is brought.

The PUP, and various other entities such as the Belize Progressive Party, Belize National Teacher’s Union and Chamber of Commerce and Industry, have all called on GOB to make the payment.
