PUC facing pressure over audit concerns

Posted: Friday, January 5, 2018. 4:23 pm CST.

BBN Staff: The Public Utilities Commission (PUC) is facing mounting public pressure after a number of documents emerged this week, including a letter from accountant Cedric Flowers regarding an audit of the PUC for the fiscal year ending March 31, 2017.

In his letter, Flowers raises concerns over several irregularities including $50,000 in donations paid out but no evidence of approval from the Commission. Flowers also noted over $70,000 in credit card expenses on things “which did not appear to have any direct relationship” to PUC expenses.

In another series of documents leaked to the media, a report prepared for the Prime Minister seemingly by an employee of former employee notes that since 2008 over $272,000 have been paid out in credit card expenses. Expenses included billings from businesses such as Riverside tavern, Barcelo Tours, Macy’s, Kahana Boutique, Royal Caribbean Cruise and Perry Ellis.

Other documents also reveal the details of a 13.5 acre property bought by the PUC for $950,000 near the Bel China bridge in Belize City plus $300,000 paid for filling the land.

The set of documents include a lot of other questionable spending habits from the PUC. BBN has obtained the set of documents and will follow up with a subsequent report including more details.
