By BBN Staff: At last week’s House Sitting, Leader of the Opposition John Briceno called out the government citing media reports that there were 145 murders in 2017.

According to Briceno, since 2008 when this administration took office, there have been about 1000 murders. He said that the government of the day still cannot bring forth a plan to ‘tackle’ this matter.

Police Minister Elodio Aragon, however, has responded saying that the official murder count is 142.

Aragon said that in 2016, Belize saw 138 murders and 142 in 2017.

The police department is to have a press conference to share the official statistics next week.

Aragon also shared that a special task force will be assigned including senior investigators to pursue the people involved in these crimes.
