By BBN Staff: Last week, BBN reported on an incident that occurred while Wil Maheia of the Belize Territorial Volunteers (BTV) and some young Belizean athletes attempted to visit the Sarstoon Island.
Maheia explained that the Guatemalan Armed Forces intercepted them and explained that since the area is in dispute, it is not for Belize or Guatemala, and tried to cease them from proceeding with their trip.
However, members of the Belize Coast Guard intervened and escorted the group around the island.
In an interview with Channel 5, Foreign Affairs Minister Wilfred Elrington said that Maheia is ‘the boy who cries wolf’.
Elrington explained that if Guatemalans are suspicious of our activities, they are prone to interpret it as threatening and they can take action: “I think it is best for us to try not to do anything to cause them to think that we are provoking them in any way.”
Elrington also told Channel 5 that Belizeans are entitled to go anywhere in Belize but personally he doesn’t visit places where he may get hurt in anyway.
The Guatemalan and Belizean foreign ministers are scheduled to meet at the end of January as Guatemala prepares for its Referendum to be held on April 15.
