By BBN Staff: The Government of Belize through the Ministry of Economic Development and Petroleum have issued a release informing the general public that the Petroleum Operations (Maritime Zone Moratorium) Act, 2017 has been enacted effective December 29th, 2017.
According to the release, the Act, which was introduced to the House of Representatives on October 20th, 2017, received bi-partisan support at the December 8th sitting of the House of Representatives after which it was referred to the Senate and passed into law.
The Act imposes an indefinite moratorium on the exploration for and exploitation of petroleum and other petroleum operations in the maritime zone of Belize.
The release ends by stating that the Government of Belize has once again demonstrated its commitment to protecting Belize’s natural resources.
