Krismar Espinosa, what is the verdict

BBN Staff: Today, Breaking Belize News will report the verdict in the murder trial of 28-year-old Krismar Espinosa, who stands accused of killing 21-year old Keon Swasey.

A 12 member jury comprised of six men and six women, deliberated on Espinosa’s fate from 4 p.m. to late into yesterday evening. Espinosa is accused of fatally stabbing Swasey while in the Belize Central Prison on Christmas Even in 2009.

Two prison officers gave testimony in the trial saying that they witnessed Espinosa commit the offence, while Espinosa gave a statement from the dock, denying the allegation. However, that type of testimony is not subject to cross-examination, which jurors needed to take into account.

Espinosa is on trial for Swasey’s murder for a second time, having been declared not guilty in the first. He is also serving 16 years for manslaughter, in the brutal killing of Rachel Chun in 2007. Espinosa reportedly sexually assaulted Chun then bludgeoned her to death with a cement block.
