By BBN Staff: Personnel from the Professional Standards Branch (PSB) and Crimes Investigation Branch (CIB) are investigating the death of 24-year-old Mario Vernon of Punta Gorda town.
According to police, around 9:30 last night, officers were on mobile patrol on George Street, Punta Gorda town and received information that Vernon was in a yard armed with a firearm.
The officers proceeded to the area and upon arrival, cops saw Vernon running in a nearby yard towards Middle Street.
According to police, cops set chase after Vernon, who was seen allegedly with a gun in his hand.
Police say that Vernon turned the gun toward the officer who was chasing him, and fearing for his life, the officer drew his service .38 revolver and fired a single shot, which struck Vernon to the right side of his head.
Vernon was transported to the Punta Gorda Town Hospital where he was pronounced dead on arrival.
His body now awaits postmortem examination.
A Lorsin brand .380 pistol was retrieved from the scene.
The Commissioner of Police has ordered a joint criminal and internal investigation into this incident.
