By BBN Staff: In a televised interview with Channel 5 news, Foreign Minister, Wilfred Elrington responded United States President Donald Trump’s comments on ‘shithole countries.’
Trump’s remarks have sparked controversy around the world after referring to several African nations and developing countries as such.
CARICOM has publicly issued a statement condemning Trump’s derogatory remarks.
Elrington told News 5 that the statement is not surprising to him and he believes that the suggestion on Trump’s position may be ‘clouded by racism.’
“That I think is the more fundamental issue, you know. The suggestion that people will not necessarily be treated equally, certainly by his administration for reasons of race, I think that is the more fundamental issue. The president seems to have his own propensity to speak in language which I wouldn’t necessarily employ and which I have not been accustomed to hearing from presidents of the United States,” Elrington said.
Elrington further stated that the language of the Presidents of the United States have usually been excellent, polite and first class and that to his opinion, Trump does not fall into that either of those categories.
