Former Guatemalan Presidential candidate wanted for money laundering charges

thy Guatemalan businessman and former presidential candidate is wanted on graft charges in Guatemala. Baldizon is seeking asylum in the United States of America. He was arrested trying to enter the US.

Baldizon ran twice for president of Guatemala. On Saturday, he was detained in Miami.

Baldizon is wanted for charges of bribery and money laundering. As a result of the politician’s link with the company Odebrecht, the Guatemalan prosecutors office has carried out 10 raids and arrested three people.

The Guatemalan prosecution says that the graft charges stem from a corruption probe involving a Brazilian company. The scandal has exposed many highly connected politicians across Latin America.

After receiving an Interpol alert, the US department of Homeland Security moved swiftly and arrested Baldizon.

The United States Embassy in Guatemala issued a statement saying:  “The United States will follow established international protocols to return Mr. Baldizon to Guatemala to face justice,”

Guatemala’s foreign Ministry informed that Baldizon has sought asylum in the US.
