Political ad draws criticism, gets fact checked

Posted: Tuesday, January 30, 2018. 2:53 pm CST.

BBN Staff: With the upcoming municipal elections, an endless bevy of unimaginative political ads from all sides have flooded the airwaves but one ad this week from the United Democratic Party’s (UDP) Belize City Council slate drew criticism and a bit of fact checking.

In the ad, incumbent UDP City Councilor Jason Edwards said: “We have rehabilitated community parks and playgrounds and built a brand new Civic Center for your recreation and pleasure.”

The claim was met with instant criticism, as it has widely been reported that the $33 million Civic Center was built by the Belize Infrastructure Limited through the central government.

The claim was further neutered by an Amandala interview with outgoing Mayor, Darrell Bradley, who acknowledged: “It was not a City Council project.”
