By BBN Staff: Belizeans may be looking at a reduction in their water bill in April, following the initial decision of the Public Utilities Commission to approve a 6.39 percent reduction in the rate.

PUC Chairman, John Avery, explained today that Belize Water Services has 15 days to respond on whether or not they agree with the reduction. If BWS disagrees, the commission will have to hire an independent auditor to evaluate the company’s proposal to keep the rate where it is until 2020.
Once the auditor makes his submission, the PUC will have another 15 days to decide whether or not to follow his recommendations. Avery said that the commission considered BWS’s financial position and expected investments for the next two years, and felt satisfied with the reduction.
“The last few years have been the most profitable for BWS in its whole existence. We believe that the company is in a place right now where they can absorb this reduction,” Avery said.
Whatever new rate is approved will come into effect on April 1, 2018.
