Agriculture ministry announces importation of sheep from USA

Posted: Thursday, February 1, 2018. 5:55 pm CST.

By BBN Staff: Monday, January 29, 2018 marked a historic milestone for the Ministry of Agriculture as it welcomed a group of imported Dorper (29 Dorper) and Barbados Black Belly sheep (16 BBB), via the Philip S.W. Goldson International Airport, from the United States of America.

Belize’s Agriculture Ministry says that the importation was facilitated through the Genetic Improvement for Sheep and Goat Project at Central Farm, which seeks to improve the genetics of sheep in the country to contribute to production and productivity improvement of the sheep industry.

The agreement between the Government of the Republic of China (Taiwan) and the Government of Belize on the cooperation in Genetic Improvement in Sheep and Goat Project was signed in December 2015.

The project was designed to assist the Ministry of Agriculture to expand the infrastructure at the National Sheep and Goat Breeding Center at Central Farm and to introduce quality breeding stock through importation.

As a part of the project’s implementation is the provision of technicians and district livestock extension officers with technical training and hands-on practice to improve their knowledge and skills in sheep production.

The newly-imported sheep will form the basis for the National Breeding Center at Central Farm to produce quality breeding stock.

The sheep are presently on a thirty-day quarantine at the Livestock Section in Central Farm.
